Reel in the Big Ones: Cobia & Spanish Mackerel Adventure

Ready to tangle with some of the ocean's most exciting game fish? Hop aboard our 26' Sailfish Walkaround for a day of non-stop action chasing down cobia and Spanish mackerel. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just getting your feet wet, this trip promises heart-pounding strikes and delicious fillets for the dinner table. With expert guidance, top-notch gear, and prime fishing grounds at your fingertips, you're in for a day on the water you won't soon forget.

What's the Scoop?

Picture this: You're standing on the bow, scanning the waves for the telltale dark shape of a cobia cruising just below the surface. Your guide spots one, points it out, and suddenly you're locked in an epic battle with one of the ocean's strongest fighters. Or maybe you're feeling the rod come alive as a school of Spanish mackerel hits your trolling spread, with multiple hookups creating chaos (the good kind) in the cockpit. That's what you're in for on this trip.

We'll spend the day mixing it up between sight fishing for cobia and trolling for Spanish mackerel, giving you a taste of two distinct fishing styles. Our 26-footer is perfect for this kind of run-and-gun fishing, with plenty of space to move around and multiple fishing stations. And with a max of 4 guests, you'll get plenty of personal attention from the captain to dial in your technique.

Tactics and Gear Lowdown

For cobia, we'll be doing a lot of sight fishing. That means cruising slowly, everyone's eyes peeled for those big brown fish often found hanging around buoys, weed lines, or even just cruising in open water. When we spot one, it's all about a quick, accurate cast and a lure that triggers their predatory instincts. We might throw big jigs, live eels, or even fly fishing gear if that's your thing.

When it comes to Spanish mackerel, we'll switch gears to trolling. We'll set out a spread of small, flashy lures or spoons behind planers to get them down in the water column. These fish are fast and furious, often hitting in quick succession as we pass through a school. Be ready for some serious action when we find them!

All the gear you need is provided, from rods and reels to terminal tackle. We use top-quality equipment that's well-maintained and suited for the task at hand. Just bring along your favorite snacks and drinks to keep your energy up during the fight.

Top Catches This Season

While every day on the water is different, we've been seeing some stellar fishing lately. Cobia have been showing up in good numbers, with several fish in the 30-40 pound range being landed. These "brown bombers" put up an incredible fight and make for some of the best eating around.

The Spanish mackerel bite has been on fire too. We're talking about multiple triple headers (that's three fish on at once for you newbies) and coolers full of these tasty speedsters. They might not be the biggest fish in the sea, but pound for pound, they're some of the most fun to catch.

Species Spotlight

Cobia (Rachycentron canadum): Often called "ling" or "lemonfish," cobia are the prize fighters of the nearshore waters. These fish can grow to over 100 pounds, though 20-50 pounders are more common on our trips. Cobia are known for their powerful runs and tendency to sound (dive deep) when hooked. They're curious fish, often attracted to the boat or any structure in the water, which makes them perfect for sight fishing.

What makes cobia so exciting is their unpredictable nature. One minute you might see one lazily swimming on the surface, the next it's taking off like a freight train with your lure. They're also one of the best-eating fish in the sea, with firm, white flesh that's excellent grilled, blackened, or even raw as sashimi.

Best time to target cobia? Late spring through summer is prime time, when these migratory fish move into our waters. They're often found around bait schools, so keep an eye out for diving birds or surface commotion.

Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomorus maculatus): Don't let their smaller size fool you – Spanish mackerel are pound-for-pound some of the hardest fighting fish you'll encounter. These streamlined speedsters can hit lures at incredible speeds, often jumping and skipping across the surface during the fight.

Spanish mackerel typically range from 2-4 pounds, though larger "smoker" kings can push 10 pounds or more. They travel in schools, so when you find them, the action can be fast and furious. These fish are known for their sharp teeth, so we use wire leaders to prevent bite-offs.

Anglers love targeting Spanish mackerel for their aggressive strikes and the sheer numbers you can catch when you get on a hot bite. They're also excellent eating, with a rich, oily flesh that's great smoked, grilled, or fried.

The best time for Spanish mackerel? They start showing up in good numbers as the water warms in late spring, with the bite often lasting well into fall. Look for them around bait schools, tide rips, and offshore structure.

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

There's something special about the combination of cobia and Spanish mackerel fishing that keeps our clients coming back for more. It's the perfect mix of sight fishing excitement and fast-paced trolling action. One minute you're stalking a big cobia, focused intently on making the perfect cast. The next, you're reeling in mackerel two at a time as they crash your trolling spread.

Our 26' Sailfish Walkaround is the ideal platform for this kind of fishing. It's big enough to handle a bit of chop comfortably, but nimble enough to maneuver quickly when we spot a cobia. With a full walk-around design, you can fight fish from any angle, and there's plenty of space for everyone to fish without tangling lines.

And let's not forget the eating! Both cobia and Spanish mackerel are prized for their flavor. Many of our guests tell us the fresh fish dinner they enjoy after the trip is the perfect cap to an amazing day on the water.

Cobia

Cobia are some of the most unique fish we target out here. These bruisers can grow up to 6 feet long and hit 100 pounds, though most we catch are in the 30-50 pound range. They're often mistaken for sharks with their sleek, dark bodies and single dorsal fin. We usually find cobia hanging around reefs, wrecks, and buoys in 30-70 feet of water. They're loners, so spotting one is always exciting. Spring and early summer are prime time as they migrate through. Sight fishing for cobia is a blast - we'll cruise along looking for them near the surface. Once spotted, it's game on. These fish put up a heck of a fight and can really test your gear. Cobia meat is fantastic - firm, white, and delicious. It's prized by chefs but hard to find in stores since they're not commercially fished. My go-to lure is a heavy bucktail jig. Color doesn't matter much, but I like to tip it with a live eel if we can get 'em. That combo is hard for a cobia to resist.

Cobia

Spanish Mackerel

Spanish Mackerel are lightning-fast swimmers that'll give your reel a workout. These streamlined beauties usually run 1-2 feet long and 8-11 pounds. You'll spot 'em in big schools near the surface, often around structures in open water. They're most active in warmer months when they come closer to shore. Trolling or drifting's your best bet to hook these guys. They hunt smaller fish, so match your bait accordingly - live shrimp or small baitfish work great. A light to medium spinning setup with 12-20 lb braid is perfect for the job. Folks love targeting Spanish Mackerel for their speedy runs and acrobatic jumps. They're also fantastic eating fish - mild flavor that's not too "fishy." Grill 'em, bake 'em, or smoke 'em - you can't go wrong. Here's a local tip: When you see birds diving, that's often a sign of Spanish Mackerel feeding below. Cruise up quietly and cast into the frenzy - you're in for some fast action!
